Travelling Solo at Christmas
As we creep even further into December, talk of Christmas starts to dominate conversations and the emphasis is on “what are you doing for Christmas?”
I’m a little bit odd when it comes to Christmas.
My family lives on all corners of the globe, so it’s only on rare occasions that I get to spend the festive period with them. Those infrequent occasions are great, but a big part of this is because it’s not every year and that makes it special.
The lack of obligations or trying to balance blended family demands on time is never really an issue for me, due to the geographical scattering of my family!
Solo Christmas with my three dogs
Most Christmas’s I “Love Actually” (ha ha) because I get to spend some truly uninterrupted time at home alone with my dogs. Without the incessant pings and blips of incoming messages and emails requiring something or other. A proper holiday!
Friends used to offer kind invites and ask me to join their family for Christmas when I was here alone. But now, they realise and understand that actually, I really am much happier to spend the 25th on my own. Invite me over for 26th Dec (Boxing Day) however, and I’m there with bells on!
I’m no bah-humbug scrooge. I love the build up to Christmas and the communal slowing down that most of us get to enjoy. I love the art of gifting to others. I hate it when I buy something that people do not want or need. A truly loved and appreciated present is a gift in itself.
But for me, Christmas Day is best spent alone with my dogs, a nice glass of port in one hand, vast quantities of chocolate within reach of the other, comfy clothes, fire on, complete control over the TV viewing schedule and not a family scuffle or spat within sight!
Solo Travel at Christmas and New Year
Even though (and as already pointed out) I am possibly an edge case when it comes to Christmas, I know others can yearn for some of the same or even to fantasise about simply getting away from it all. In my last article, “I’m dreaming of a solo Christmas” I pulled together a couple of my favourite Winter experiences that are perfect for a Solo Christmas getaway.
Whilst I love spending Christmas Day at home, the period between Christmas and New Year is the ideal time for me to indulge in a short luxurious break – perhaps a relaxing spa retreat, a chic city break or snow filled winter wonderland. I may even venture further afield to enjoy some Abeona Time.
Last year, just after Christmas II headed off to Argentina and explored the wonders of Iguazú falls. It was a fantastic experience in a wonderfully beautiful place. My hotel, the five star Gran Meliá Iguazú was just blissful, the food was sumptuous, staff so friendly and welcoming and the views were breathtaking.
Taking time out was the perfect way to renew my energy before the New Year began.
Solo living
Solo living is all about embracing moments, making them your own and revelling in the freedom that comes hand in hand with those experiences that you get to enjoy on your own, in your own time and at your own pace… and that is no different at Christmas or the New Year!
Embrace your wanderlust and enjoy those special moments of freedom.
