Solo Travel: The Self Care Prescription for 2024

At Travel with Abeona we’re firm advocates of solo travel as an essential part of your self care routine. We know how exhilarating, revitalising and energising a good travel experience can be. The very act of travel has immense psychological and physical benefits.

In our modern western lives we are so very often living in a state of stress and the need for self care has never been greater.

Physically, we’re static and not resting enough

A great many of us spend long hours sitting hunched at our desks. Throw in the constant bombardment of stimulation from work, family, pets and of course exposure to our beloved devices, and as a result we overwhelm our brains with information and activity.

We’re so used to life being one big marathon of activity with one task quickly following another, we no longer rest throughout the day, in the way we are meant to.

Living in a state of hyper-focus, we become accustomed to operating at a pace where cortisol levels are through the roof, so in time we become almost addicted to the burn of high performance and overstimulation.

We run the risk of burning out.

Venturing to new places, travelling alone as a woman and taking yourself out of the everyday, allows you to reconnect with nature, reconnect with your body and reconnect with yourself.

Reconnect with nature

So on our solo travels, we’re often drawn to beautiful places. Nature beckons and draws us in, calling us to visit amazing, uplifting and soul inspiring vistas, forests, mountains and coasts.

The Guardian talks of the restorative power of the outdoors.  Forest Bathing has long been a Japanese tradition and one that is reaching out into western culture.  The Global Wellness Institute provides a good source of research insights shore up the benefits of “shinrin-yoku”.

Blue skies are known to make us feel good and may even change how we feel about our own bodies according to an article by the Independent.

Reconnect with your body

As women, we carry our stress in our hips.

All of our emotions are stored in our bodies and unless we work hard to release them, it stays there. We’re stiff, restricted in our movements and full of tension.

Travelling alone as a woman, you can take time out and reconnect with your body and mind.

Yoga retreats and wellbeing packages are a natural choice for those of us looking for a slower pace and more sedate rejuvenation.

For those seeking adrenaline fuelled mindfulness, high octane sports might be more your cup of tea. A new type of mindfulness travel is emerging. Adventure holidays that involve a greater deal of physical excursion and resilience like hiking, climbing, skydiving, and trekking are now climbing the charts as popular choices as part of self care vacations.

Reconnect with yourself

Spending time with just me, myself and I is a fantastic way to reconnect with yourself and reset your compass.

Through travel, we redefine who we are, allow ourselves to experience the greater joys of life, give our brain, body and soul time to reconnect with nature and the wider world.

Whether you Indulge in a week-long yoga retreat, a trek in the mountains, or white water rafting, each moment, each journey gives you time out for yourself away from work, away from family and leaves you empowered, confident, energised, focused and ready for more.

I cannot think of a better tonic for the soul.
